An unfortunate Fourth of July boating accident left one Louisville woman dead and left a family mourning during a time that is usually reserved for celebration.
A Louisville woman was killed in a tragic boating accident while vacationing in Hampton, Virginia. The boating accident occurred on Sunday, July 4th when her boat, driven by her 8-year-old son, crashed into a pier after spending a family day on the water. Elizabeth Elliott, 45, of Glendale, KY, died from injuries sustained during the accident. At the time of the accident, another adult on the boat allowed her son, David Elliott, to steer the boat.
According to recent news reports, when the child took over control of the boat, he unintentionally veered into and underneath the pier. According to the Director of Public Relations for the Marine Resources Commission of Virginia, "Ms. Elliot was sitting in the front of the boat when it crashed into the pier. When the boat hit the pier, it began to submarine underneath the pier. Ms. Elliot was thrown back from the collision and from the impact."
Ms. Elliott was rushed to Riverside Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after the crash. Elizabeth Elliott was an Air Force veteran of Operation Desert Storm and served ten years in the military. She also owned her own antique store in Sonora, Kentucky.
Elliot is survived by her son and her husband, Dr. David Elliott. Funeral services for Elliott are scheduled for today in Hampton, VA.
